Firstly apologies for the time delay in posting this. Full time jobs, families and training and preparation for the World Masters next week has resulted in a slow response and collating our thoughts and for that we are sorry. So here is our report. The selectors had been tasked in helping support the raising of the profile of Mountain Bike Orienteering in Britain. As ever they were keen to send the best riders to the World Championship who could perform alongside the top elite riders in the world. After much research from several years of previous results from WOC’s and domestic races, it was recognised that there was a pattern of % off the winners time that would provide a good indication as to whether a British athlete would be likely to be performing at a good standard in what has become a far more competitive world arena. The selectors however were keen to balance this with allowing younger or promising other riders a chance to perform at a world level. World Cup races are seen as an obvious opportunity for such riders to gain valuable experience. This will continue to be a priority in the next year. This is the first year such a % threshold has been used and the bar was intentionally set slightly higher than the pure calculation had determined. With selection races over a couple of months we hoped that this would encourage riders who were slightly off the pace early on to keep up with their training both in terms of fitness and in terms of O skills. The selectors realise that for some this really worked and for others, with a poor performance early, it seemed an impossible target. It was always stated that the % will be reviewed on an annual basis but at this early stage from a selectors perspective it provided a very useful benchmark. The selectors also recognise the importance of publishing selection races as early as possible to try allow people to plan their priorities. As a result of this performance target, 2 men and 2 women had achieved the standard or very close to it in 3 out of the 4 races. In effect they selected themselves as a “Pick A”. We were delighted that this included one rookie who has worked hard in improving his O skills which has been rewarded and one of last years more novice riders has worked hard at her fitness levels with the deserved results. The remaining selections all fell within “Pick B”. Three of the riders had previously performed to the required standard on the world stage although had not met the threshold criteria on the required races this year but had been close. They also brought with them a huge depth of knowledge that was seen could benefit the younger riders and less experienced. One of them was willing to act in the Team Manager role – a key role within the team which adds pressure for that rider. Two of the riders had not only performed very close to the threshold on the required races but were also providing family support for junior riders. One of these has since withdrawn from the Team. One of the other encouraging aspects of the selection races were the conversations the selectors had with other riders that were “in the mix” and above the threshold on one or two of the races but had not put themselves forward for selection this year. We would like to encourage such riders who would like to focus on selection next year, to consider gaining some experience at World Cup races later this year. Whilst only 6 men and 6 women can compete at these from each country and first priority will be given to those already racing and attaining ranking points at this elite level, we would give next priority to promising younger riders who have already shown their ability in some domestic races. This could provide valuable experience for the future. The Selectors are keen receive any feedback on the selection process this year and would ask that you send this to: selectors@bmbo.org.uk Finally may we wish all those selected, successful racing this summer.
