Medal Bonanza at World Masters sprint
Posted: 23/08/12
The masters were in action today whilst the elite riders had a day of rest. The format was sprint but what was perhaps not quite as expected was that the event was mainly urban with a few loops through the local forest. The course started high up the hill and provided a net down hill course but we were not spared a few steep climbs in between. The format provided some fast and furious racing with some very close times.
Charlie Somers-Cocks was really pleased to overcome an Australian rival who she had never beaten before to take the Gold medal. Angela Brand-Barker also had a superb race and put her recent urban foot O experience to good practice to take the Bronze medal.
The M40 race provided no less than 3 of the 6 podium places. Killian Lomas improved on his Bronze medal of 2011 to take Gold. His ride was followed keenly by the rest of the team watching the live gps tracking on the big screens. There were a few tense yet exciting moments! Brothers Al and Ifor Powell completed the podium positions taking 5th and 6th respectively.
Super rides from all and a proud moment to hear the National anthem played not once but twice.
The M50 race did not provide any podium positions but was keenly fought within the GB team. It was John Rawden who took team honours reversing his result in the middle. Only 30 seconds separated John from Graham Fielding and Tony Brand-Barker.
Biggest smile of the day went to Graham who finally felt that he had got it right!
Tomorrow is relay day with 6 GB teams taking part.
