Chairman and Treasurer proposed for AGM
Posted: 12/11/12
After much consideration and discussion with current Chairman John Houlihan, I hereby put myself forward for consideration as the new Chairman of BMBO.
I see the role being very much about promoting the sport of Mountain Bike Orienteering, promoting BMBO to both the membership and the organisers and generally bringing more people into the sport. The outcome should be continued growth of the participant numbers at events, more support and benefits to members and organisers alike and thus securing a long term future for the sport, the BMBO and the membership.
For those that do not know me I’m 46 years old and very much a cyclist through and through. I’m an “Early days” MTB XC recreational rider and racer and returning cyclist after career & life diversions. Having returned about 12 years ago I’ve been an active competitor in all things from Time trialling, Cyclo-Cross, MTB cross country racing, Road racing, Track racing, Criterium races and of course MTB orienteering and related endurance events over the last two years. During this time I’ve been keen to introduce friends, club/team mates to all disciplines and have always fostered enthusiasm in my son’s cycling.
Our own interest in MTB Orienteering came about just by chance after a winter training ride with team mates. One happened to mention that he was doing an event the following weekend and there was even a class in which my son could ride with me. Well this sounded perfect for us after many drawn out event days previously where we would both race individually, usually at opposite ends of the day. The rest, as they say, is history with my son now being at a level where he will soon be considering me a handicap!
To the role I bring perhaps a different perspective and hopefully a new resource for the organisation to draw on. I have a sales & marketing/Commercial background in my professional life and hopefully with a few clear objectives this will benefit all of the membership.
In summary, I have the following objectives;
1. Promote BMBO to members – benefits that the BMBO brings to members
2. Promote BMBO to regional organisations and event organisers – continuing to expand the benefits that BMBO development brings
3. Promotion of the sport and BMBO to current non-members / riders of all ages, both sexes, increasing access & uptake to the sport
Please feel free to comment on my proposition and should I be elected I would very much appreciate any views and suggestions on how to help achieve these objectives. I’ll be just as interested to hear from newbie participants/organisers as well as those experienced members who are the current lifeblood of the sport who commit so much time and effort already to make it all possible.

A few words from John Houlihan.
Martin Vesty has the right skills and interest to take BMBO forward. Most of the committee is continuing in post, therefore the day to day running is covered and Martin will be able to focus on his objectives. BMBO does much to make the running of events easier for organisers and gives the sport a coherence through a governing body. BMBO has continually reduced its costs over the years and provides very good value for money.
Together organisers and riders are stronger through BMBO. However the very fact that BMBO works in the background means many do not understand what it has done and currently does in developing and supporting the sport. We must look forward and I believe Martins fresh eye and experience will bring a new perspective to the weaknesses and strengths of BMBO.

Neil Hymer has stepped forward to take on the Treasurers Job for 2013. Neil will be working with John Dixon on an orderly transition.
