Event Report
NYMBO Update – April
Swaledale MBO Score
I thoroughly enjoyed planning the event as it gave me a good excuse to get out on my bike in beautiful countryside in February when I might have been tempted to leave my bike in the garage. I altered the competition area from 2009 and tried to make it smaller than usual with control sites on some tracks that haven't been used before. It was still never going to be possible to get all of the controls but I should have made more points available between Healaugh and Langthwaite. Very few of you went there as the best scoring was in the 2 loops north and south of Grinton. I am glad the weather was so good because some of you found the navigation difficult and the splits make interesting reading. It is a complicated area which is why I made a reduced 1-25000 map available which shows all of the fences and walls. Controls 6, 16 and 23 caused the most problems but they were definitely still in the right places when the volunteers collected them in.
Thanks to all the helpers as usual and Jens for the map. A special thanks to John Dixon, Steve Swann, Pete Smith and Stuart Price for putting out the controls with me on Friday - and Andy Conn who put out 2 on Saturday morning as Stuart had had a mechanical on Friday night. Thanks also to John Dixon (again), the Appleton family, Andy Parsons, Will Wilson and Sammy Wilson - who had to collect #23 which he hadn't been able to find during the event.
Final thanks to Stuart and Brenda Price at the Dales Biking Centre for providing an excellent event centre and parking. Stuart is going to create a permanent MBO course which you may want to try later in the year. The event made a slight profit as we didn't have to pay for access so the Swaledale Fell Rescue Team and Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust have been sent donations of £50 each.
Congratulations to Will Simmons on an excellent score to win overall. Phil Webster used his local knowledge to good effect to win M40, Tony Brand Barker overcame a poor start to win M50 and Ray Morris won M60 with 5 more points while Sheila Pearce was the overall womens' winner.
The next NYMBO event takes us back into the forests with a 3 hour event in Wykeham Forest on May 7th but, if you like the longer events on the Moors, I hope you will be able to get to the first NEMBOS event at Blanchland this Saturday to ride Martin Edwards' 4 hour course. He has used his local contacts to gain permission for some estate tracks that have never been used before. However if you fancy more gentle riding the Summer series starts with a 2 hour event at Pickering on Tuesday 17th May.
