NYMBO Update – May
Wykeham & Bickley MBO Score
Dave Evans planned an excellent course for our first visit to Wykeham for 2 years and altered the usual competition area by including the bridleways south and west of the forest as well as the eastern edge of Bickley Rigg. The tracks were as dry as they have ever been so I am glad the event was on Saturday rather than Sunday due to the overnight heavy rain. Apologies for the error on the map with #25 marked twice instead of #24. It caused slight confusion for most riders but only one rider couldn't find #24 so he has been given the points. Apologies also for mentioning 5 hours in the final details and 2 hours on the map for what was always going to be a 3 hour event. Better proof reading needed next month.
Thanks to all the helpers as usual and Jens for the map. A special thanks to John Dixon and Adrian Baskerville for helping me with the computer system as Dave Relton was running the SI system for an Ebor event and Sue was ill. Sorry that there were no results on the day but my printer caused the computer to crash on Friday evening and I didn't want to take that risk on Saturday afternnon. Thanks also to Bob Macdonald, Ralph & Chris Defty, John Butler, Will Wilson and Sammy Wilson for collecting the controls afterwards with Dave Evans.
As usual there was a great variety of routes chosen but the majority tended to head south using the bridleways and roads before heading into Wykeham Forest then deciding whether to cross Troutsdale or just head back for Sawdon. I went for a short ride as I was in charge of SI this month so decided to just stay in the forest. I really enjoyed the track down to Wrench Green but paid the price getting back into the forest. I was going to go straight from 23 to 19 but took one look at the track and went back and round by the forest roads. Looking at David Day afterwards, it was the right choice. Congratulations to Edwin Oliver-Evans for a fantastic ride in the Youth category to win overall with 483 points and I think he could have cleared them all with a different route choice!! He also beat his Dad (M40) who finished second overall with Simon Greenwood on 455 points. Mike Nayler won M50 with 440 points while John Dixon won M60 with 448 points and 4th overall. Sheila Pearce was the overall womens' winner with 423 points just ahead of Jill Furphy who was also only 7 points behind Conrad. Andrea and Steve Foster won the battle of the mixed teams with 377 points.
It was great to see 110 riders turning up especially as there was an unfortunate clash with the National MBO weekend.which attracted a few of our regular riders. It was also lovely not to see any litter or gates left open when the controls were collected in - and no complaints from farmers or gamekeepers - thank you. Unfortunately, 2 riders took the shortcut between #27 and #18 cutting across the field between the bridleway and the forest edge so they have lost the points for the one they visited second. Please remember that inside the forest boundary we can cycle on any tracks that are marked but we cannot cut through the trees. (It is especially important at this time of year due to nesting birds). Outside the forest we can only use bridleways and public roads and the open access agreement only applies to walkers. There was a 'grey area' between 22 and 29 when a few of you followed a faint track which wasn't meant to be used and is actually just a parish boundary. However it is a track inside the forest boundary so you are getting the benefit of the doubt.
Dave Evans writes - I started surveying the course in mid-March when the weather was cool but dry, little realising that it would continue through until early May, but hey, this is England! Bob MacDonald and I set up the course on Friday evening in very warm sunshine and even the small amount of rain on Saturday failed to prevent a fast course, in what can be a very wet forest. The winning score of 485 was a fantastic ride; I thought 450 would be the highest score. Everyone seemed to enjoy the ride and a few commented on the new tracks they had discovered in the forest - I'm sure there are some I have still to find.
There were 2 items of lost property so please let me know if you are missing a helmet or pair of sunglasses and I will bring them to the next event.
I hope you will be able to get to the second NEMBOS event on the Teesdale moors from Grassholme Reservoir on May 21st. I have planned this 5 hour event and have been delighted with the fantastic countryside and the attitude of the local farmers and gamekeepers who have given us permission to use 4 private estate tracks as well as a disused railway line.If you live in the northeast and want to help on the day at registration or collecting controls please let me know and you will not have to pay for your ride. I would also be grateful if anyone can spare a few hours on Friday afternoon to put out some controls. You will still be able to ride competitively on Saturday - and it will be free! The next NYMBO event also takes us out onto the moors with a 5 hour event from Fadmoor village hall on June 4th planned by Ralph & Chris Defty. However, if you fancy more gentle riding the Summer series starts with a 2 hour event planned by Mandy Faint at Pickering on Tuesday 17th May.
