Event Report
NEMBOS Update – April
Blanchland MBO Score
Martin Edwards planned a brilliant event and used his local contacts to gain access to private tracks that we have never been able to ride before. It was his first attempt at planning and he did a really thorough job, ably assisted by his family who collected all of the controls afterwards. The weather was perfect and the route choice was formidable. The terrain was unbelievably dry so all of the tracks were very rideable on the moors and in the forest. Thanks to all the helpers as usual and Jens for the map and a special thanks to the landowners for the use of their private tracks. We only had permission to use them on Saturday so please don't ruin our reputation by using them for your social rides! Hopefully we will be welcome back there next year as Martin has already offered and his family are all geared up to help again. The controls were all collected in by 6.30 and there was no litter, no gates left open and no complaints from any farmers or gamekeepers so thank you.
Although the numbers were slightly disappoing we did break even and had some excellent competition. Andy Conn was back to his fighting best and just held off John Houlihan to win M40 and overall. Angela Brand-Barker won W50 as well as being the first lady.
Planner's Report
The first North East MBO for over a year and the first event I have ever planned. A challenge which I eagerly took on and looking back extremely pleased I did. It was tough going during the colder / damper months planning the event but a great excuse to get the bike out and get some miles under the belt. Due to the recent dry spell the control setting out was a pleasure on Thursday night and Friday in preparation for Saturday as the tracks had dried up perfectly. Once all riders departed on Saturday morning I crossed my fingers and hoped everyone would enjoy the stunning area and control point positions including the private tracks especially opened up with permission from the landowners. All of the positive feedback was great to hear when the riders began to return from 3pm onwards; everyone seemed to enjoy an amazing 4hrs riding the perfect tracks that had been opened up for the event. Thank you to all 53 riders who entered, making all of the hard work well worth while.
A huge thank you must go out to all the local estates and landowners that granted permission to allow the event to go ahead and utilise the private tracks that are normally closed for cycle access. Thanks to James Scott-Harden - Blanchland Estate, East Allenheads Estate, Stublick Estate, Micky Lee – Harwood Shield Farm, and many more local farmers for allowing the event to be so special. Also a big thank you to the local residents at Blanchland for allowing us all to use the excellent facilities in the village hall! Thank you for help on the day from John, Adrian, Karen, Chris, Steve, Clive and Barry who ensured all ran smoothly!
All the positive feedback from the riders made what seemed like a daunting task - gathering all 30 control’s in within 2hrs - extremely easy, coupled with the world class support from my family and friends. An extremely huge thanks must go out to Alan, Gillian, Gemma, Nicola, Susan, Joanne and Brian as all controls were safely back in Blanchland just in time for a well deserved pint at the Lord Crew before heading home.
The next NEMBOS event will take us further south into Teesdale and is based at Grassholme Reservoir on May 21st. We have again obtained permission from 3 landowners to use their private tracks and there is also a disused railway line which provides fast easy riding.
The next NYMBO event is at Wykeham & Bickley Forest on May 7th and Dave Evans has planned a challenging course. However if you fancy more gentle riding the Summer series starts with a 2 hour event at Big Bear Bikes in Pickering on Tuesday 17th May.
