Event Report
NEMBOS Update – June
Gisborough Moors MBO Score
Thanks to Conrad and Jill for planning an excellent course in another beautiful part of northern England. The mixture of forest and moorland was perfect and the views from the bridleways were superb. It is 5 years since the last Clok event in the area so hopefully it won't be as long until we return.
It was reassuring to see 72 riders -30 more than last month - and the event has made a slight profit. We still need more publicity so please let me know if you would like to volunteer to get our events known on more web sites. Usual rate of pay - free entry to NEMBOS events for the season. Thanks to all the helpers as usual, Jens for the map and a special thanks to the control collectors who were out in the rain again!!.
I rode non-competitively as I had seen the map and wanted to be the last starter and first finisher so that I could make sure that the SI kit was working correctly. I decided to stay north of Kildale and the route I took brought back memories of orienteering events and the Gisborough Moors Race when I used to be a runner - Sleddale, Gribdale Gate, the woods below Captain Cook's monument, Aireyholme Farm, Roseberry Topping, Lowcross Woods. I was just glad I didn't have to use the bridleway over Roseberry Topping!!
Congratulations to Andy Conn who managed to visit all 30 controls in just over 3 hours. Perfect planning as far as I am concerned as everyone else scored lots of points. Mark McPhillips came second overall but was disappointed to miss out #24 as his map was folded over! Graham Fielding won M50 in his first event and John Dixon just pipped Dave Lloyd in M60. Angela Brand-Barker was the highest scoring woman and the closest competition was in the mixed categories. Karen & Steve managed to outscore Chris & Ralph and Andrea & Geoff in X50. Mike & Caroline were close in only their second event but the overall winners were newcomers Margaret Scott & Ian Makinson in X40 who used their local knowledge to great effect.
I have 2 more items of lost property - another pair of glasses and a drinks bottle. I will bring them to the next event.
Jill & Conrad write .. We really enjoyed planning the event on our door step in an area which has some great tracks and thankfully not a great deal of people about. We were looking for people to get plenty of points and give plenty of route choice. We figured out that a clear up was possible doing a figure of 8 around Kildale in 50km (4, 9, 12, 11, 1, 7, 5, 15, 23, 16, 26, 22, 30, 10, 8, 3, 14, 25, 27, 17, 18, 29, 24, 19, 28, 2, 13, 20, 21, 6) so we were looking for some of the fast riders to come close and Andy C managed to get the lot. It was good to see a good turnout and people coming from further afield as well as a few first time locals. We did plenty of plugging of the next event at Cropton so you never know. We would like to thank the NYM NP and Forestry Commission teams and all land owners who were extremely helpful and supportive. A big thank you to Steve Willis for helping us throughout and Jens for weaving his map magic and Karen and John D on registration as well as Richard and James for both gate closing and control collection duty and John R, Bob Mac and Christine and Ralph for control collecting and Adrian for his SI and download services.
John Dixon has sorted out the NEMBOS league now that we have had 3 events - with 2 more still to go. Prizes will be presented to the leading riders at the final event at Wark Forest in September. Kris Smith leads M21, David Cowgill is just ahead of Andy Conn while John Rawden and John Dixon are clear leaders in M50 and M60. Karen Blackburn is leading the women's section but Angela B-B has only ridden 2 events. Andrea & Geoff lead the mixed teams but hopefully there will be more competition at the next 2 events
The next NYMBO event is part of the Summer series with a 2 hour event planned by Geoff Moorhouse and Steve Foster in the Washburn valley on Tuesday 14th June. The next NYMBO league event is in Cropton Forest with a 3 hour event planned by Steve Roberts & Karen Clark and based at Stape village hall. The next NEMBOS event is also a 3 hour event in Hamsterley Forest planned by Neil Hymer & Barry Watson.
