Event Report
A final total of 50 riders took part in the last round of the XCC Summer Series on Sunday with an age range from 13 to 74 !!!!! Very impressive particularly in the extreme conditions , it was a mud fest , and at such short notice! For those who didn’t already know I should explain this was the event previously planned for 22nd May (when I ended up in hospital) and we managed to squeeze it in at the last minute , so the conditions of the trails were considerably different from those I encountered in April and May when originally planning it , also anybody that thought the facilities a bit lacking have to realise running it from a caravan awning and gazebo which became the only option was only possible with the help of my wife Susan who also did the grub and drinks and helping out with the parking. Believe it or not we were all lucky with the weather on the day if you consider what we got the day after (when I was collecting the last of the controls in) ! My many many thanks to Tony Brand - Barker , John Johnson and his son Ben for the invaluable help they gave me also at short notice and my sometimes riding partner Steve Watson also marshalling in the cars safely and sensibly with Susan.I received many comments ,which I appreciated , as it was my first attempt at organising ,but no actual complaints , although a few considered the map a bit too large even for 4 hours. I had put the start / finish in the middle of the map with the intention of providing lots of route choice and what I thought would be 4 definite loops. I’ve analysed the splits etc .( which should be available soon) and was pleased to see that all 30 controls were actually visited , and they were all visited by me several times both for the May event and Sundays !! I hope the routes accurately reflected what I promised on the event flyer and also the views through the rain and mist , and it must have been a nightmare for the many folk who got punctures with all that mud around , blame the farmers for slashing the dykes , one was actually doing it on the day !!!
Obviously the scores were comparatively low both with the map size and conditions underfoot , but ALL points were very hard earned indeed so credit to each and every rider for having a day out in some of our special West Cumbrian weather . Finally , there was a slight glitch re: the penalties in that they didn’t correspond with those printed on the map , winning scores were unaffected so sorry for this slight error.
The overall winner was Graham Fielding with 288 points followed closely by David Cowgill with 286 and John Rawden with 280 , and the category winners were : M21 =Alan Hartley , W21 =Philippa Liles , M40 = David Cowgill , W50 =Anne Plant , M50 = Graham Fielding , M60 = Henry Syska , X40 = Alistair /Jane Hornsby , X60 = David / Miriam Rosen , Generation = Chris Whitby /Alex Chaudhri.
All in all I hope it was a satisfying experience for everyone , and hope to see all of you again soon ,
John Johnston (J.J.)
