Event Report
After a day with some very heavy showers, a sunny evening dried the roads and saw over 100 cyclists take part in the first of this year’s Lakeland Lanequest in the series of six. Way back in 1995, International Orienteer and Oxen Park resident Carol McNeil devised a series of 2 hour road bike orienteering events, 16 years later they continue to flourish and grow in popularity, and have raised over £14,000 during the previous 15 years, which has all gone to benefit local charities.
So it was that the entrants a mix of solo, teams and generation pairs, with a wide mix of abilities and ages, set off from the Cavendish Arms in Cartmel, to visit as many of the 30 controls in the 2 hour time limit in Event 1 of the 2011 series, again sponsored by Wheelbase of Staveley. Organiser David Heffernan from Ulverston and last year’s Solo Mens champion overall series winner had planned a careful spread of controls south to Humphrey Head and north to Ayside to test riders route planning and judgement of their cycling abilities.
Only 4 points separated the leading three men in the hotly contested Solo Men class, 2009 series winner Mike Toyn, visited all 30 controls but incurred time penalties to score 292, from David Hollingham 290 and Tom Gibbs 288.
Last years' Solo Womens champion Anne Plant looks as though she may have some serious competition this year as she unusually had to share first place, both Anne and Stephanie Jones scored 230 and they were closely followed by Jo Cleary 225.
Bryony Halcrow the 2010 Junior Champion, topped the Juniors Class on 226 points from Natalie and Carrie Beadle 170. The Generation Pairs class saw Matt and Katie Woods score 238, from Stuart Walker and Parris Huitson 210, and sharing equal third Chris Stevens / Hannah Cleary Hughes and Jack Smith / James / Smith with 200. The Adults pairs / 3’s saw Mike Brooks and Andy Beck clear leaders with 264 from Colin and Gillian Fell sharing second with Jennifer Hutton and Nick Hewitt with 200.
The next event of the series of six 2011 Lakeland Lanequests, is on Tuesday 14th June from The Greyhound Hotel, Shap CA20 3PW (NY 566143)
Lanequests are 2 hour bike orienteering events on country roads, suitable for all bikes, and with a choice of classes to enter; they are ideal for leisure and also more competitive cyclists alike.
