Lakeland Lanequests Event 6 – Staveley 12th July
The final event of this year’s Lakeland Lanequests from Wheelbase and Wilf’s in Staveley saw David Hollingham extend his slender lead to win the Solo Men’s class, with Anne Plant in her usual first place in the Solo Ladies.
The network of minor roads south of Staveley offered the 116 riders many varied routes choices, with the organizer Steve Mason spreading the controls around Crook, Winster, Crosthwaite and above Strawberry Bank. The combination of the narrow lanes which included many steep climbs added to the challenge, and no doubt contributed to many of the riders incurring some time penalties.
These final results would decide the overall league positions with the best four scores from the six events counting. A closely fought competition in the Solo Men resulted in a winning score of 1206 for David Hollingham (Endmoor), from Mike Toyn (Staveley) 1192, and David Heffernan (Ulverston) 1169 in second and third. Anne Plant was the winner of the Solo Women’s title with 1068 points from Stephanie Jones 1025 in second, and Jo Cleary 1018 third place. The Juniors saw Bryony Halcrow a clear winner with 962, a very notable performance that would have placed her fourth in the Solo Women, from in second place Jake Mason & Tom Simpson 720, and third Peter Thompson 420. The Generation pairs saw Matt and Katie Woods score 1010 to hold first place from in second with 920 Stuart Walker and Parris Huitson, from third placed Chris Stevens & Hannah Cleary Hughes 883. In the Adult pairs / 3’s a close contest saw their journey from Lytham worthwhile for Andrew & Sarah Crozier who won with 1058, to narrowly beat second placed Mike Brooks and Andy Beck 1054, from in third Helen Jackson and Paul Vousden 924.
The results for the final event from Staveley were; in the Solo Men the first three all visited all 30 controls; Bryan Singleton (Little Langdale) and David Hollingham (Endmoor), incurred 4 penalty points each to score 296 and to tie for first place , from third placed Tom Gibbs, who scored 292 with 8 penalties. In first place in the Solo Women Stephanie Jones 260 points, from Jo Cleary 250, just ahead of Anne Plant 248. The Juniors saw a tie for first place between Bryony Halcrow, and the junior pair of Jake Mason / Tom Simpson, both scoring 250. In the Generation pairs Matt and Katie Woods led with 250, from Chris Stevens and Hannah Cleary Hughes 230, from in third Peter Thompson and Jack Wilson 214. In the Adults pairs / 3’s Andrew and Sarah Crozier won with 266, from Helen Jackson and Paul Vousden 240, and in third Tony and Paul Richardson 222.
This was the 16th year of the Lakeland Lanequest series of bike orienteering events, and this year each event has raised around £300, going to the charities of the event organizers choice. During the ‘Winners Cut the Cake’ to announce the league winners, Carol McNeill, the series organizer, said the events had continued in popularity, which was proved as around 300 cyclist had taken part during the six week series. Carol also said that plans are under way for next year’s events and that she had already recruited some organizers. Toby Dalton from Wheelbase the series sponsors confirmed that they would like to continue as sponsor for next year’s series of Lakeland Lanequests.
For you Lanequest geeks here is what Steve Mason the organiser of the Staveley event had calculated as the best route at 49.37km and 442m ascent – 9, 4, 10, 22, 30, 16, 1, 5, 12, 18, 24, 28, 6, 2, 19, 13, 25, 20, 29, 7, 17, 11, 21, 14, 26, 3, 27, 8, 15, 23
David Holligham did a slight variation with his route - 49.65 km and 462m ascent -
9, 4, 10, 22, 16, 1, 5, 12, 24, 28, 6, 18, 2, 19, 13, 25, 20, 29, 7, 17, 11, 14, 21, 26, 3, 27, 30, 8, 15, 23
Looking later with more time David found a slightly improved route at 49.12 km and 429m ascent
9, 4, 10, 22, 30, 16, 1, 5, 12, 24, 28, 18, 6, 2, 19, 13, 25, 20, 29, 7, 17, 11, 14, 21, 26, 3, 27, 8, 15, 23
Although doing ... 12, 18, 24, 28, 6... gives 48.43km and 439m ascent which may be better.
Carol complimented Dave on his consistently efficient route planning, and thought this was an important factor in his winning the men’s’ series title. So now you know what you need to do next year – use the time you have before the event to study the map, so then it might just be your speed (or lack of it) and overall fitness (or lack of it) that will let us also ran’s down. Either way they are still a great way to get out on a bike around the lanes of south Lakeland in June and early July, and Tuesday evenings are going to be that little bit empty without them until next year.
