Event Report
Pedal Mad’s latest Event and the latest round of the PedalMad/Somerset MBO’s winter league, took place on Southern Dartmoor based from South Brent Village Hall.
The event was the second of the Six race Winter Series
Sunday saw some very good weather; dry, bright and mild which all were grateful for, considering the clocks are due to go back in 7 days. The moor and the lanes were dry in spite of the rain that fell the night before.
A mixed entrant of 40 came from far and wide including, experienced orienteer’s, elite cyclists, families and complete beginners. Little did they know what was in store for them.
The fun event meant that families with young children and beginners could take part over a shorter time of under 2 hours and those who wanted more of a challenge entered the more competitive event and had 3 hours to visit as many controls as possible.
The terrain was extremely varied, from narrow enclosed lanes typical of South Devon, open moorland byways being over energy sapping grassland Hills to woodland and lots of hills, the terrain giving very little rest bite from the continuous up and down. Looking at the amount of penalty points which were awarded, many were caught out by the relentless terrain. Did I mention the hills?
A special Note must be made here for Ifor Powell who took a tumble through burned off gorse. He arrived covered from head to foot in mud charcoal and blood, looking like he had been down a mine rather than cycling…
All the competitors were grateful of the tea coffee and food which was laid on to help get the blood sugar levels up again, and this gave the opportunity to swap stories of individual adventures. I think there may have been some very sore legs on Monday morning…
The event winners were:
Best Team – Janet Burroughes/Matt Jepson
Best Solo - Ifor Powell
Best Youth – Ed Ames
Best generation Team - Harriet and Paul Ames
Best Generation Team 2 hour- Donna and Finnegan Timmis
Best Overall 2 Hour- Dave Bramley
All those who took part enjoyed the event and were already asking about the next. The next event in the series will handed over to our partners at Somerset MBO and be held in the Quantocks and held on the 4th December 2011.
