Event Report
Round 3 of the Pedal Mad and Somerset MBO Southwest League took us to the North of the region to the barren moorland of the Quantock Hills.
On a milder than normal day for the time of year (this time last year the Hills were under a foot of snow!!!) just over thirty riders took to the hills. With clear skys riders who took the time were rewarded with glorious views across Exmoor to the Southwest and out across the Bristol channel to Wales in the North.
Using a remote Start enabled the riders to start up toward the top of the hill, instead of having to endure the massive climb up in race time. With the complex and intricate path network up on the hill the riders had to keep on the ball to avoid becoming disorientated. The many combes on the hill provided some superb downhill runs which inevitably were followed by some muscle-bursting climbs. The fast, flatter tracks of Great Wood offered a little relief until the energy zapping muddy paths of the lower wood were encountered.
On such a gruelling area we thought we should be kind and provided the Superb 2km downhill, Bicknoller Combe, from the obvious last control to the finish.
With everyone back coated in the staining quantocks mud, with huge smiles from the final descent, the results were announced:
Ifor Powell continued his dominance with his 3rd straight win (he missed 3 controls though), consistent Janet Burroughes & Matt Jepson took Mixed Pairs, Mike Dixon & Peirs stockwell, the Pairs. Harriet & Paul Ames took the Generation Trophy with Ed Ames making it a family 100% taking the Youth trophy. Nicky Griffin took the Female Solos.
With everyone safely tucked up back at home, the heavens opened as Rich and myself slogged around collecting in controls. Come 5pm, by bikelight, the final control was collected and it was off down the pub for a well deserved pint!!!!
Thanks for everyone for making the event a success, and we hope to see you all again when we hand the reigns to Pedal Mad and the League heads South to the lovely leafy lanes of the South Hams on the 29th Jan 2012.
The results can be found in the Results Archive tab from the home page of this site.
