I thoroughly enjoyed planning the course in March when the tracks were much drier and 52 riders was better than last year but still disappointing. The event just managed to break even but we still need to encourage more riders to take part in NEMBOS events. Any ideas would be appreciated. I know the weather hadn’t been very good recently and the forecast didn’t encourage many entries on the day. Fortunately, we didn’t have to pay any access fees so made donations to Northumbrian Water for the excellent event centre/parking at Grassholme and the Teesdale & Weardale Mountain Rescue Team.
Thanks to Jens for another excellent map and the volunteers who made the event run smoothly – especially the control collectors. We were all in the Fox and Hounds at Cotherstone by 6.30.
I had managed to gain permission to all of the private estate tracks again as well a couple more and the old railway line so there was some fast riding to compensate for the very soft bridleways. I had worked out an optimum route of 60k which I thought would be enough but Andy Conn managed to get all 30 controls with 3 minutes to spare despite a puncture. However, it does mean better league points for everyone else.
Congratulations to the category winners especially Graeme Fielding who scored 515 to win M50 and second overall; John Dixon (500 pts) reversed last month’s result to beat Ray Morriss by 20 points in M60; Max & Martin Vesty just pipped Richard & James Martin to win the Generation class with 435 points; Angela Brand-Barker (W50) was the leading female rider with 425 points outscoring the leading mixed team of Andrea Foster and Geoff Moorhouse with 390 points; and Rik Thompson won M21 with 420 points in his first event after illness. Commiserations to Conrad and Al Powell who both scored 500 points to lose to AC by 25 points.
Please remember that we only had permission to ride the private tracks last Saturday and they are closed to mountain bikers for the rest of the year.
I hope to see you all and a few more at Kildale for the third NEMBOS event of the season next month. Conrad and Jill have planned another excellent course.
