Event Report
Helmsley MBO
Thanks to Dave Lloyd for planning another excellent MBO event as part of the White Rose weekend. He had gven us plenty of choice in a variety of terrain so that different techniques were needed in the forest and then on the moorland bridleways. There was always going to be a critical decision to be made in the middle of the map - and I as usual these days made the over-ambitious choice of going around Pockley Moor! However plenty of riders got it right including Andrew Windrum who won comfortably and wasn't far off cleaning up. I think Andy Conn was still recovering from his swim in the Tees on Sunday!! Some riders chose the small loop around Heater Rigg Plantation first before heading out clockwise via Rievaulx Bank while others went anti-clockwise past Carlton and into Riccaldale. Wherever you went the scenery was spectacular and the tracks were a pleasure to ride. Let's hope it stays as dry for another fortnight so that the tracks in Dalby Forest are as fast and the moorland bridleways are firm for the Marathon.
Karen Blackburn (W60) was again the highest scoring individual woman with Karen Clark (W50) just pipping Jenny Sutton (W21) while Jill Furphy won W40. In M40, Richard Jones, Conrad Ellison and Andy Massey all had excellent rides to get closer to Andy Conn than usual. Paul Thornton and David Rose rode in their first NYMBO events for a while to show that they still have good navigation and fitness to beat the other M50s and M60s comfortably. The Foster's just outscored the Defty's in X50 as well as Steph and Jeffrey in X40 and first timers Sacha & Toby in X21. Sammy Wilson had to settle for second place in Y18 behind Jonathan Williams while the Evan's just outrode the Martin's.
Thanks yet again to Jens for another excellent map and all the helpers who made everything run smoothly especially the control collectors - Andrew Windrum, Dave Evans, Bob MacDonald, Andy Parsons, Chris & Ralph Defty and Will & Sammy Wilson. Thanks also for the Helmsley Estate at Duncombe Hall for allowing us to ride in their private woodlands.
PS There are 2 items of lost property so please let me know if you have lost a pump or a pair of cycling gloves. I will post them or bring them to Dalby
John Dixon has added the Malham and Helmsley results to the league so with only 2 events to go things are getting tight.
Andrew Windrum has a 11 point lead over Will Simmons in M21. Andy Conn has a 45 point lead over Andy Massey but is lying third overall. John Rawden has a 17 point leadover Mike Nayler while Dennis Jacques leads Geoff Moorhouse by a single point with David Day a further 48 points behind in M60. The women's categories look fairly clear-cut so it is more a case of who is going to be the overall winner. The current positions are - 1st Sheila Pearce W40-394 2nd Karen Blackburn W60-325 3rd Jenny Sutton W21-264 4th Jill Furphy W40-242 5th Karen Clark W50-225
In the mixed categories Steph and Jeffrey will probably win X40 but will need extra points to overtake George & Karen Hamilton who are leading Chris & Ralph Defty by only 9 points in X50. Sammy Wilson has already won the Youth class while Richard and James Martin have a 43 point lead over Tim & Edwin Evans in the Generation class.
Andy Parsons has planned an excellent course in Dalby Forest while Simon Coiley is just putting the finishing touches to his course in Cropton and Newtondale. They are both 3 hour events in large forests so the first decision at the start on both days is going to be critical.
