An unexpected turn out
It took Team Oa 6 Hours to get all the check points out on Friday (yes we had to take the day off from our real jobs!) the snow and wind on Friday, was worse than we expected, at points had to rely totally on GPS to work out if we were placing checkpoints in the correct location! This did leave us a little unsure about proceeding with the event on the Saturday.
Wane made the decision on Friday night, the event was going ahead, the only issue may have been, getting to the actual event centre but this could always be relocated if needed. Team Oa arrived at the Lower Royal George a little after 0700 and yes it was dark it was definitely cold and everything was covered in a lovely crisp layer of fresh Yorkshire snow.
Competitors started to arrive just before 9, all very excited about the prospect of a few hours running, riding, sliding or in some instance not even moving, through the snow. We managed to get the start, up and operating at 0900 so most were off a little before 0930, I would like to say a big well done to the three mountain bikers who cycled to the event, one of them from almost 20 miles away, mad or just committed to the sport I’m still not sure! As promised we kept the start open until 1100, when our last competitor arrived all the way from Nottingham.
The excitement from every one on their return was amazing, everyone had many tales of snowy exploits to tell, everyone agreed that this event would be one that would be mentioned for many years to come and every one commented on how thankful they were that we didn’t cancel it due to a little snow!
