Event Report
Allerdale Bike Challenge 2013 – the final report.
The series has now come to an end and prizes have been awarded. This was our first attempt at organising this series and it is something we hope to repeat in the future. The very many positive comments and thanks that we received have made it really worthwhile. We have already got some ideas for venues and areas to use next year. The one thing that we cannot guarantee next year of course is the weather. After the horrendous summer of 2012 what were the chances of having five evenings of glorious sunshine for you to play in?
We were never quite sure how many riders to expect but in the end we had about 130 riders do one or more of the events. The average attendance was in the 50s. This made for some good competion proved by the fact that only one class had been settled before the last event in Keswick.
Our aim, as planners, was to keep the series simple and with a consistent format. With this in mind we had just 20 controls worth 10 points each. We tried to keep you off main roads but still offer you between 30 -35 miles of riding to clear the map. Mawbray turned out to be a bit longer because it was so flat. As we wanted the courses to be accessible to all, we also tried to ensure that there were enough controls close enough for beginners and juniors to amass a decent score. It was really pleasing to see so many juniors taking part. We even had a tandem, a tag-along and a recumbent bike, as well as the full range of road and mountain bikes, which proved that the events were truly accessible to all.
We hope that the format worked for you but any suggestions on how to improve it will be appreciated. We are going to investigate the viability of electronic timing using SI kit to make our lives easier next year.
The online entry system caused a few of you some problems. It does work if you persevere but as a result of your feedback some changes have and will be made in the future by BMBO. Online entries can be made by members and non-members alike. If you do not wish to become a BMBO member you should join as a day member (free) which saves you having to fill a form in at each event and reduces the admin work for organisers. Juniors who were charged full rate had mistakenly joined BMBO as full members and not as Juniors. We refunded all those that we knew about.
Congratulations must go to all of the winners. Phil Davies and Chris Hope dominated the events throughout to score maximum points. Katie Lukas proved to be too strong for Helen Hope and Kath Wrigley and took the women’s honours.
Well done to Pete Leeson and Angela Wakefield who held off a strong challenge from Roger Jackson and Margaret Mackenzie to win the mixed class.
To decide who had won the generation class we had to wait for the very last rider on the very last event before we could declare a winner. Well done to Karen & Matthew Blackley who narrowly beat Zoe & Ross Ferguson. Our youngest competitor was Ben Wrigley who, riding on a tag- along trailer bike, reckoned that his dad, Andy, was not trying hard enough. Sorry Andy but 170 out of a possible 200 is simply not acceptable!
Ellis Hansen and Heather Wornham, making the transition from foot O to Bike O, completed the prize list by taking the youth category.
Spot prizes were awarded to all who had completed in all 5 events.
The final league table is attached whilst results for each individual event can be seen on the British Mountain Bike Orienteering website. If you have enjoyed these events keep an eye open on www.bmbo.org.uk for more opportunities to compete.
As we had more entrants than expected, we have ended the series with a surplus so we have decided to make a donation of £250 to a number of local charities on behalf of you all.
The prizes were sponsored by Bufera who provided Buffs for the winners and the stickers that entertained the youngsters. The event was also supported by High5 who provided the energy gels and Keswick Bikes who provided vouchers and helped with the advertising of the events. Thanks to you all.
Our thanks also go to the host venues, Dean Village Hall, Mill Inn at Dearham, 4Play Cycles of Cockermouth, Dunes Café at Mawbray and the Lakeland Pedlar in Keswick for providing some great locations for the events. Most of all thanks to you all for taking part and hopefully see you next year.
