Event Report
ABC 2014 Final Report
We’re writing this report as we pack our “Clydesider” bags. Interesting to think that Tony is one of a few hundred volunteers needed to make sure 70 or so mountain bike racers can compete in an hour long event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Allerdale Bike Challenge, by contrast had FIVE keen organisers / planners for over 250 rides over the five events lasting 10 hours total!
We are always keen to improve the format of our series so many thanks to all those who took time to fill in the feedback sheets. Judging by the feedback we have received, it looks as though we have a popular recipe for these evening events, but in summary:
• electronic timing will be used in 2015 (all riders like it & results processing is easy for organisers)
• most riders (two thirds) prefer to receive the map just on the start line. A few comments refer to riders new to Bike-O not knowing what to expect. We will provide blank maps at registration next year which should help overcome this.
• most riders are happy with just 20 controls. We are considering having a few more controls next year and comments relating to having more controls closer to the venue to encourage family groups are swaying our opinion that way – watch out for 2015 ABC news!
• having all controls worth 10 points is easily the most popular choice
• using BMBO website, WCOC newsletters and e-mails seems to be the best way of communicating so we aim to continue using these avenues.
• We also hope to create a facebook profile in the near future…….keep your eyes open & please “like us”!
We will confess to being powerless to honour two requests – good weather and flat roads are outwith our control – sorry!
We would like to say a big THANK YOU to all riders for riding safely, to all of our venue hosts and to the people of Allerdale who let us use their roads and signposts, gates etc. Having a pair of shears handy when control setting would be useful next year as not all village parishes are as diligent as others when it comes to vegetation control!
WELL DONE to the 2014 ABC series winners Richard Wren and Kate Charles.
Our thanks go to our sponsors, BUFFERA and HIGH 5, who provided many more prizes than last year so we were able to extend the prize list to all age categories this year.
Thanks also to The Dunes at Mawbray who provided an excellent location for post- series “craic” and prize giving.
We are also making donations to local charities including to the MS Society as a result of Steve Birkinshaw’s excellent run around the Wainwrights. A truly amazing achievement which puts our little 2 hour jaunts into perspective.
Dates for next year will be: - 20th May, 3rd June, 17th June, 1st July and 15th July. Put these in your diaries and book your baby/dog sitters NOW!
Although we have some plans to revisit old areas we also have some ideas for new ones too. All details will appear on www.bmbo.org.uk in due course and maybe even on a Facebook page if us old technophobes get our heads around it!
In the meantime the final results are on the website
See you all next year, enjoy the summer and may your wheels go round!
