Event Report
The first Lanequest of the 2015 series kicked off from the Wheatsheaf Inn , Brigsteer. Course planner Carol McNeill created much scratching of heads at the start, with routes choices seemingly in a number of circles: a favourite ploy of Carol's.//
//Full results can be found here, and on www.wheelbase.co.uk ...see" Events"//
//First off is second place Dave Heffernan, commenting on the night's experience: with only 4 points separating Dave from overall winner Tom Gibbs, it was a close run thing.//
//This is followed by Tom's comments.......//
//......of course each class was very closely fought, especially in the women's solo where Helen Jackson and Jo Cleary continued their tussle from last year//
//Dave Heffernan://
//I found this event to be quite a challenging plan. It never occurred to me to join 11 with 22 which I think was the option that lead to the shortest routes. So I guess I went a little further because of that. But there were so many options. //
////
//I wanted Brigsteer hill east to west because the downhill can be taken much quicker that way. Of course, it left me with the uphill on very empty legs. And short of time, which made it a little nerve wracking!//
////
//I also regarded 24 and 27 as the candidates for dropping, so I went anti-clockwise which meant I they arrived in the second half when hopefully I was better placed to decide whether or not to drop. However, because my first half was quicker I ended up at 24/27 decision time well up on par time and did not want to commit to dropping a control. But then the second half was a lot slower and I needed to drop a control! Which turned out to be 17. Perhaps less beneficial to drop than 24 but not really too much in it.//
////
//So my route ended up //
////
//22 5 4 (out and back) 3 1 2 6 11 14 23 19 12 7 15 20 16 21 28 24 27 29 30 26 25 18 13 10 9 8 (wheeeeeee).//
////
//I was just over two minutes late so 290 with 6 penalties. Not that far behind bionic Tom so I was reasonably content. I think on the hillier courses his light weight, and my excessive poundage, will make it harder for me to get close, but I'll give it my best.//
////
//A notable ride also from Sam Clifford in third. Check out his route on Strava. A very effective way to get 28 controls! I think he must have decided to go for 28 and picked a really good way to do it. And he had 3 minutes to spare. Good effort.//
////
//Also a fine 270 for Daniel Noblett on what I think is his first ever ride in this series.//
////
//So, thanks to Carol for another fine mental (and physical) test and on to next week on roads very close to my home!//

//Good Summary Dave,//
//-I also thought it was a tough event to plan the optimum route, pretty sure I didn’t manage it ! I wanted to aim to do the flat stuff with a tailwind and ideally get up Brigsteer hill the steep way as it suits my riding. Also with the route I’d planned I’d left 14 until right at the end as an out and back. The hard part planning for me was picking up 21 and 16. To get 28 controls I’d probably of dropped these 2, but was aiming to clear it so had to find a good plan to get them.//
//-I decided to head straight up Brigsteer then hide in the lanes to the south to avoid the headwind. The narrow lumpy lanes were slow going and I felt behind where I thought I needed to be, doing about 24km in the first hour. I out and backed 24 and then up the hill to 28 then north to 21. I got to 20 with 45 mins to go and decided to drop 15 as I felt I was going to struggle to get more than 28 controls. As it was the northern bit was fast and I managed to get 14 and be just under a minute late – if I’d of done 15 instead then I think I’d of been back on time. Looking at Dave’s route I think his was slightly shorter for the northern bit, but not by much. Be interesting to see if there was a better route overall.//
//-My route was:-//
//8,9,10,13,18,17,25,26,30,29,27,24,28,21,16,20,23,19,12,7,5,4,3,1,2,6,14,11,22. //
//-According to Strava I did 55.1km and over 600m of climb (felt like more climb).//
//....I’m hoping for much hillier ones to come so Dave isn’t as close !!//
