Event Report
This, the most technically demanding of the 2017 series, proved to be challenging in more ways than expected. Firstly getting to the start proved difficult due to the A595 being closed for repair and the approved detour going right through the middle of our area. Then our hearts missed a beat when we heard that there had been a major road accident right in the middle of our map. Fortunately (for us at least) it was not a cyclist but an an over enthusiastic driver overtaking where they shouldn't. The combined bedlam of a detour and an accident held up some of the riders. Apologies for that but whereas we seem to have the reputation for controlling the weather this situation was right out of our control.
Second apology was for the missing control #11. Having organised nearly 40 events this is the first time we have ever had a control stolen.
Hopefully it did not hold you up too long as it was on a very obvious navigational feature. We have credited all of the riders who pointed it out at the finish.
Many of the old railway lines in this area have been converted to cycle ways and we wanted to make use of these for the first time. The transition between cycle way and road seemed to slow people down and scores were a little lower than normal. It also meant a very wide selection of scenery from urban, to country, to industrial and coastal all adding to the navigational challenge.
Well done to Dave Cowgill who claimed his first ABC victory and also to Fiona Wright who produced a very strong performance to finish 3rd overall, only one control behind the leader.
Thanks to Maryport Golf club for providing a very sociable atmosphere and nourishment for tired riders, and to our antipodean friends who came all the way from NZ to help us collect in controls as well as meet up with some old friends!
Results as always are on the bmbo.org.uk website. We would love to hear your feedback on our Facebook page. We are always looking for ways to improve what we offer so constructive criticism always welcome.
The next event will have a very different character as we visit the Caldbeck area for the first time. Starts will be from the Oddfellows Arms in the centre of the village. Please respect the local residents by parking sensibly.
Entries are already open so please enter online to save time and money, and make our life easier.
Thanks for coming and looking forward to another sunny evening.
