Event Report
Sunshine and light winds greeted the 42 riders that turned up to compete in the CATS MBC event set around the Welland Valley and the Rockingham Forest area on the Leicestershire, Northamptonshire & Rutland borders.
With a maximum of 500 points on offer early thoughts from the organisers was that a score of 450 should be achievable as the tracks and trails had dried out unbelievably over the past 2 weeks and there were only a few boggy patches in the woodlands and farmers tracks.
As the early riders arrived back with scores around the 200's they were telling the organisers how hard it was out there and when the favourites arrived back with time penalties saying that they had got lost in Fineshades Woods trying to navigate between 2 of the checkpoints and had lost loads of time(The curse of the Gruffalo) we knew 400 might not be achieved until Ian Cartwright came in with 410 with only seconds to spare, to take the victory from Mark Rowley on 383 from Andy Hilder on 381, both scoring 390 with only time penalties separating them. 1st lady back and a magnificent 4 overall Sheila Pearce scored 328 and 5th overall coming back from a back injury Phil Upton on 317. One rider told us how he had been attacked by Hornets and had to abandon his bike whilst others remarked about the views of the countryside and the Welland (Harringworth) viaduct. Overall I hope a good time was had by all.
