Event Report
Ringwood Forest North Score Event 19 June 2010//
////
////
//When this event was first agreed it was the intention to use what will be eventually a permanent MTBO course in Ringwood Forest North. However due to delays the Forestry Commission were not able to produce the necessary Permanent Course posts in time or to agree to allow the whole forest to be used for a Permanent MTBO course. Watch the Wim web site for information as to when the reduced MTBO Permanent Course is finally put in place which we hope will be in the late autumn.//
////
//As usual Wimborne Orienteers used the Moors Valley complex for parking and administration where there are full facilities including a shelter with power for computing. This works well and for this event it then meant a 2k warm up ride to the start in the adjoining Ringwood Forest North and then after finishing a return ride of 2K to download. //
////
//On a superb sunny but cool day 48 competitors took part. The North Ringwood Forest orienteering map was used and the area is really challenging for a score event since it contains many tracks and paths but some really steep climbs. Route choice is crucial since mistakes can see riders incurring large amounts of unnecessary climb. It also seems several riders made the mistake of visiting some controls twice.//
////
//There were 25 controls to be visited with a 2 hour limit and a superb ride from Sam Massey (Southampton Orienteering Club) saw him complete the course in just 57.54 with Jon Brooke (Wessex Orienteers) and John Cameron (Wimborne Orienteers) only 51 seconds behind in joint second place.//
////
//Mel Rayner (Wimborne Orienteers) was the first lady home in 88.05 closely followed by Nicola Brooke (Wessex Orienteers) in 88.15. The morning also saw several youngsters taking part some with their parents and even one father and son on a trailer bike.//
////
//It seems that all competitors enjoyed their rides in the lovely weather and with most of the tracks and paths dry and albeit bumpy in places this meant for really fast times. It is also interesting to note that Chris Turner (Wimborne Orienteers) ran the course in the creditable time of 88.52 to register in 15th place. //
////
//May I thank all those Wimborne Orienteers members who gave up their time to so willing assist me in putting on this event.//
