WMTBO - Final Day - Long Course
Posted: 25/08/12
The final day took the riders out into an army training area. There was a little bit of everything (except hills much to Angela's disappointment). Fortunately the temperatures were not quite as high as yesterday and there was a pleasant cooling breeze. The first part of the course headed out into the forest before breaking out into the open area that was used as a tank training area. Once in the open the orienteers had the advantage as the controls were not placed on tracks but needed the interpretation of subtle contour details. After the second map exchange the courses headed into town and a killer climb up to the finish in the town square.
Charlie once again proved her dominance in the W50 category and goes home with an excess baggage allowance of trophies and medals. Angela Brand-Barker despite a frustrating ride made the podium in 6th.
In the M40 GB was once again very visible having taken 4 of the top 8 places. Pride of place went to a delighted Andy (captain) Conn who won a superb bronze medal behind the Czech Rygl brothers. Killian Lomas also made the podium in 6th place to overcome his disappointment in the relay. 7th and 8th went to the Powell brothers with Al once again getting the edge over Ifor.
Em Benham had a creditable ride in 9th position whilst Ed Oliver-Evans again showed his potential for the future with a 22nd place in the M20. Top Elite was again Ian Nixon in 43rd with Andy Douglas finishing in 51st. Steph Fountain in her first A final finished 53rd.
The private battle in the M50 for top Brit once again went to John Rawden in 22nd place overall. Close packing saw the remaining four Brits finish between 27th and 32nd.
B final races and the open race will take place in the heat of the afternoon.
Once again full results will be on http://www.mtbo.hu/
Overall a superb week for British riders and a record medal haul. 3 Golds, 2 Silvers and 2 Bronze as well as a clutch of minor podium placings.
This is my last report. Well done to all of the GB riders and thanks to the Hungarian organising team for a great event.
Tony Brand-Barker,
Watch out rest of the world!
