Event Report
Event 4 of the 2019 Series, using the SAF format, covered the south eastern part of the Forest of Dean starting from Upper Soudley in the north east. This time I included The Kidnalls area of The Forest to bring some new variety to the event. The permissable forest tracks were largely north south loops with restricted access between these resulting in winning scores reflecting optimum routes. //
////
//The Forest of Dean is showing increasing signs of conflicts of interest in terms of activities taking place and perceived environmental concerns. This year a BOF national orienteering event was cancelled just weeks before it was due to take place at the end of this month. The problem being restrictions to most off path areas because of goshawks starting to breed. Luckily our event was not affected yet we knew the FC cap on rider entries needed to be adhered to carefully. //
////
//The night before the event I discovered that one control was sited by a watering station for the FOD half marathon on the same day! Next morning the control was moved 500m south, maps changed with control description remaining the same. Riders seemed unaffected by this.//
////
//The weather up to and including the event was dry and bright resulting in fast, warm riding conditions. We had a full entry and Strava records indicated that riders in the top 10 were covering over 50km in the 3 hours. For some it was more hilly than anticipated though climbs tended to be short. //
////
//Only one rider, Harry Kingston, M21, managed to clear all 20 controls and scored 399pts, though several others were not far behind://
////
//= 2nd Mark Morgan M50, Ifor Powell M50, Iwona Szmyd W40 & Mark Rowley all with 390 pts. //
