Event Report
What is the difference between mist and fog? Well it was a misty start to the day with a hope of it clearing later but by the end of the event, it was definitely a pea soup fog! At what point the mist became fog is open to speculation! The fist or mog certainly caused a few problems for riders opting to descend into Borrowdale from the Whinfell ridge. Not normally a problem in clear conditons. Riders opting to go the other way around and do the long push up found it easier to navigate. //
//Conscious of potential bad weather this time of year we had kept most of the controls low in the valley with just a pop over the top in to Borrowdale using the transmitter road. Knowing this was a big committing climb we tried to make it worthwhile by placing the 50 pointer and a string of 30s around the loop whilst still ensuring that those who were daunted by the climb could still accrue a big score in the valley. We thought that the direction of travel around this loop was key to success or failure but in the end it appeared to make little difference. What surprised us was the number of riders who had the confidence in their ability to clear up in the valley before committing to this big loop at the end of their ride. //

//What also surprised us was the distance people are prepared to drive to take part. The record must go to Ifor who traveled up from Bristol for the day but there were several who clocked a 200 mile round trip. Who called cycling a green sport? ! As organisers we really appreciate the fact that you made the effort to take part in our humble little event. We hope that you found it worth while.//

//In the end Andy Conn turned in the biggest score of the day collecting all bar two controls. Hot on his heels were Graham Tibbot, Ifor Powell and Mark Rowley all with over 500 points. A hotly contest mixed category went to Emily Brooks and Max Cousins while Ruth Walton just sneaked in front of Karen Blackburn to take the ladies prize. Debuting as a generation team for the first time Peter Strong and son Billy took the honours. Well done to all.//

//Many thanks to all who took part and hopefully you can make the next event at the Wheatsheaf in Lorton, Cockermouth on the 3rd February.//
