Event Report
Having selected the event centre for its good choice of camp sites in its vicinity and plenty of open space to sit and chat post ride, we were praying for good weather. Wow maybe not that good! The maps had been set out such that Day 1 would be just about clearable, keeping the fastest riders scores close with it all to play for on Day 2. Day 2 map was all about route choice and selecting which controls to drop..... something the fastest riders often don't have to contend with.
Well the heat on Day 1 soon put a spanner in the works for that theory.... With riders being briefed on water top up points, you all headed out with as much water as you were able to carry...thankfully all riders seemed to pace themselves, stories of farmers taps, icecream vans and local campsites providing the necessary top -ups along the way was the main talking point on return...
Two casualties on Day1 stole the limelight with ambulances called for both: Angela Brand Barker – with a wasp sting that made it increasingly hard for her to breathe- thankfully recovering fully within a couple of hours... and Alan Shergold who made it back to the event centre only to take a tumble on arrival, what initially seemed innocuous turned out to be more serious and he was taken to Chesterfield hospital. A call that evening confirmed that Alan had broken his elbow and his hip... both have been operated on and he is in good spirits – we all wish you well Alan and a speedy recovery.
Thankfully Day 2 passed with a lot less drama and post event conversation was about route choice, stories of what if.... and finally the presentations by BMBO.
Well done to Graham Tibbot and Andy Conn who got close to clearing up on both days and to Rachel Drew who took the Female top spot.... great to see so many women taking part too
Congratulations to all prize winners but more so to all who took part to make the event the success it was..Many of you are all too familiar with the event area and happy to be back competing in it again, for others it was your first time but with fantastic views (especially the Northern part of both maps) and varied well drained technical tracks it was a pleasure to be a part of it.
The splits for all riders shows route choice and that even those who know the area well had plenty of decisions to make along the way...
The organisers would like to say a big thankyou to all those who helped out on both days especially Di (Jeffs better half) for taking on first aid duties as well as catering, to Phil Thursby, Sheila Pearce and Lisa welbourn collecting controls and manning the start/finish desk , to Tony Brand Barker and Ben Martin for presenting and indeed anyone who I apologise for missing to mention....
Hope to see you all at a Midlands MBO event in the near future, for further details: http://www.midlandsmbo.co.uk/
