Event Report
Thanks to the 53 people who turned out for this the first of the 2019 Allerdale Bike Challenge. You did not quite have the full sun that we enjoyed as we set the course but it must have been pretty close to perfect riding conditions. Our reputation is still intact ! Thanks to our main sponsor Amos of Keswick Bikes, for letting us use his shop as a base and to Kat's Kitchen for once again making sure that no one went home hungry.
This year we decided to make the courses shorter and have more controls closer in to give you the opportunity to build bigger scores. This did mean that six riders cleared the course. However as we applied the new BMBO rule which gives riders who clear the course bonus points for every minute early we had a clear winner in Alan Hartley. Hopefully that explains why he scored 278 when there were only 250 points to be found! Well done also to Victoria Haworth who gave the regulars a beating. It looks like the W class is going to be very competitive this year.
There was some discussion afterwards about how much or how little tape to hang near controls. Some want it, some think it unnecessary. It is difficult to get the balance between making a control obvious to riders but not to the general public. Our policy is that if the control is a little obscure we will add a piece of tape to make it a bit more obvious. We use white tape with our sponsor's logo, Buffera, printed on it. An eight foot high footpath finger post does not really need tape to make it more obvious unless it is buried in the hedge. So remember to look for the feature first, the tape second and that we normally hang controls at the base of a post.
The next event is at Embleton Village Hall on 29th May. Unfortunately our planned pub venue was not able to accommodate us but there will be some drinks and snacks available in the hall. If anyone is wanting hot food or something a little stronger the Chef at the Embleton Spa Hotel opposite knows that some of you might be popping in.
Results from Keswick can be found on the bmbo.org.uk website so while you are having a look why not get your entry for Embleton in.
