Event Report
So, you’ve been competing in Trailquest / Mountain Bike Orienteering for at least 15 years and you’re asked to set up an event for your local Mountain Bike Orienteering Group, Midland MBO; what do you do?
Well, you ask your usual cycling partners / regular Trailquest Team members to get involved and get thinking.....
There is something quite different between regularly competing and actually organising but you’ve got a good idea of what a course should involve.
Move on 3 months and we have set an area with a mix of urban and countryside to the West of Nottingham, using plenty of Bridleways including local cycle networks and permitted canal towpaths.
Turns out the terrain caught out a number of competitors; there was an expectation that its fairly flat to the West of the city, ah, how they were surprised.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the event; despite some seeming misgivings about the urban mix, everyone seemed to enjoy the extent of the area we set.
The weather was pretty much ideal albeit cool and grey; certainly better than it had been earlier in the week such that trails were generally dry and firm.
Congratulations to Mark Rowley on leading with 440 out of the 550 available and impressively with only 10 seconds to spare.
My huge thanks to Graeme Barker and Richard Chaney for the ongoing assistance in setting and route checking the area; sorting the buffet and manning the start line; thanks also to Brian Reynolds for the beta testing of the proposed checkpoint position and values; and thanks to Katherine Sanders and Sophie Plastow for the further assistance in collecting checkpoints after the event.
And of course thanks to Jeff Mew, Phil Upton, Martin Bevan, Dave Tipper and Phil Botting for the online assistance in sorting the electronic elements of the event; and anyone else I apologise if I've missed you here.
So, will there be more of the same again? I think so; watch this space.
See you out in the field.
Richard
