Event Report
We’ve always associated Allonby with wind, chips and ice cream. The 2nd Allerdale Bike Challenge of 2021 certainly delivered a stiff breeze but the Codfather chippy closed its doors at 6pm and the queue for Twentyman’s ice cream was so long when we had finished setting out the checkpoints that we had to miss out on that treat!
Great to see faces new to ABC riding – hope you felt it was worthwhile travelling from Bedford, St Albans and near Bristol for a two-hour ride around the flatlands of the Solway. For those who managed to look up from the road / map in a south-easterly direction, the Northern fells looked stunning.
Our planning seemed about right as all checkpoints were visited – number 1 was the least popular, only recording 10 visits. Three people visited 24 checkpoints. Their routes were not identical as they missed out 1, 14 and 21. For those of you who fancy an armchair challenge – which one would you have missed out??
Quite a few riders incurred penalty points for lateness – “wind blowing in the wrong direction” seemed to be the predominant reason for this. Thankfully no-one got delayed by silage tractors or herds of cows – that was our prerogative when setting! The road surfaces were also challenging at times but at least the dry weather meant no “muddy” farmyards.
Thanks for all riding safely and for the kind comments. The Keswick event on 16th June has 40 entries already. We have never had to impose a limit on numbers but the one hour start window makes it a challenge to manage many more than 60.
Entries and further details are on the www.bmbo.org.uk website and the Allerdale Bike Challenge Facebook page
Hope to see you again, Tony and Angela
