Event Report
Keswick is always a hard event to plan as there is not a dense road network in the vicinity and we always try to avoid the use of major roads. As this area is also a tourist “hotspot”, we were quite glad to see cloudy, misty horizons and hoped that this would mean roads were quieter. Listening to comments at the finish, it seems that the railway path was virtually empty of walkers, dogs etc. When the controls were set out on Wednesday afternoon, it was akin to cycling along Blackpool prom!
It is never our aim to “hide” checkpoints but it sounded as though a few riders cycled past one or two and had to retrace their steps a short way to “dib” – not sure if cycling too fast was the problem or just too much vegetation. I gather that the white tape is much appreciated by competitors – however, it also seems to be a favourite of cows so quite a few straggly pieces were collected after the event! I hope that those riders who visited checkpoint 15 in Threlkeld village appreciated the floral display (pic on ABC facebook for those who didn’t choose that route).
Thank you all for returning safely. As this map had some short “off-road” sections, these can be quite challenging on skinny tyres. No silage tractors for this event, just one rider had a close shave with a supermarket delivery lorry on a very narrow lane (he was wearing many shades of green so well camouflaged against the hedgerow!)
Well done to the riders who came and rode their first ABC event – we hope to see you again. Well done also to Tom Gibbs who cycled 53kms to visit all checkpoints in the time limit.
The next event from Watchtree nature reserve won’t have many contours on the map but the wind may be blowing. The outdoor café there is hoping to offer limited snacks and drinks – more details on this closer to the 30th June
Entries and further details are on the www.bmbo.org.uk website and the Allerdale Bike Challenge Facebook page
Hope to see you again, Tony and Angela
