Event Report
So it’s all over.
A wild and wet (and we mean wet) day failed to put a damper on the enthusiasm from the 35 hardy souls who turned out yesterday for the final round of our 2021 series , which culminated in Tom Gibbs and Charlie Somers Cocks crowned as Lakes MBO Series Champions- congratulations both! And we must mention our first ever E Bike Champion- Stephen Morriss, following in thw winning footsteps of his dad Ray
With a few final placings to be decided in the league, and the promise of shiny trophies, T Shirts, mugs and vouchers on offer it was at 9.32am that Any Conn reluctantly ventured out side into the mist shrouded miserableness to dib and set off ( or was it paddle?). So awful was the weather that it was a full 15 minutes before anyone else set off, and, with the slightest hint that things might improve, many of the remainder left it until nearly 10.30, including eventual winner Tom Gibbs: at one stage we thought he might have legged it back home…
The venue was the Stickle Barn and with the entire conference room at our disposal, radiators for some warmth and an endless supply of tea, coffee and croissants, this was one event where there was a general lack of enthusiasm to venture out!
But a superbly crafted route awaited. Map Planner Dave Cowgill knows a thing or two, and as anyone who has experience of putting an event like this together will know, it takes days, even weeks to craft a route, check and re check, then spend days putting out and taking in controls. He’s probably out there now trying to unscrew the cable nut on a dibber secured to a finger post in the middle of nowhere…
So hardly a surprise that folk waxed lyrical about the experience- soaked to a person ( man/ woman/other) everyone had a ball- with tales of riding tracks that had become rivers abounding.
The post event banter was as usual of the highest order, and all remaining croissants greedily scoffed…..and at 2 pm on the dot BMBO Chairman Tony Brand-Barker led the Series prize giving ceremony, with Dave Cowgill assisting: lots of goodies were on offer of the likes not seen on an MBO Score event ( or Trailquset as they were) in many a year - proper trophies and not just for the winners; vouchers , T shirts and mugs.
A big thank you to our generous sponsors- Wheelbase for the trophies and vouchers and Carlisle based Alpha Financial Services for the Lakes MBO T shirts and mugs- plus the organisers’ hoodies.
It wouldn’t have been a series without you the competitor, of course, so on behalf of the Lakes MBO organising team, thanks for supporting us in our first series- we hope some of you will step forward with the offer to organise an event in our 2022 series- plenty of help and advice is available - we hope to hear from you!
