Event Report
Chiddingfold in the south-west of Surrey was the base for the latest SLOW MTBO score event, planned by Julian Hemsted. Although much of the riding in the Surrey Hills such as Hydon't Ball to the north of Chiddingfold is on sandy terrain, the village is based on Wealden Clay. At the time that the area was surveyed for the event, the bridleways were easy riding and fast, albeit somewhat horse-churned. By the time of the event, however, the bridleways immediately around the village were suffering from the effects of a wet month and were brown, sticky, soft swamps of mud. Cycling through them was a challenge and bikes and riders returned to the event base covered in mud.
Riders were forewarned of the conditions so some chose to pick a route which avoided the worst affected areas and head to the better running northern portion of the map. They returned with clean bikes but covered a greater distance.
Winner of the 3 hour SAF event, Ifor Powell scored 480 (of 520 maximum) to clearly draw ahead of the field. An excellent performance in difficult conditions. Nuno Cerqueira and Rachel Drew took the next two podium spots.
In the 2 hour score event, Liam Drew was the clear winner with 325 points with Adam Conway in the youth category following him with 240.
