MILFORD COMMON EVENT REPORT – Dave Tipper
This event was always going to be risky from an organisational perspective due to it being held the day after NewYears day. As it turned out the select number of bold competitors proved it to be a well chosen date and worth the effort.
The weather was of course dry and somewhat bright although the track conditions were decidedly wet. Based on iOrienteering and with no indoor shelter the weather was indeed fortuitous.
The inclusion of a 4 points per minute penalty ensured very little lateness overall.
I was particularly pleased with my planning as there were numerous initial directions taken from the start and close scoring at the head of the field.
It was a first for a competitor riding an ebike to head the leader board. So congratulations to Mark Jeavons who has shown me how it can be done!! Marks success was assisted by his comprehensive knowledge of Cannock Chase but not so by his lack of competition for many years.
Ladies were in sort supply but those who did attend did very well with Kate Lowndes, on her first outing, taking the top spot with Val not far behind and retaining her top spot in the mini league.
It was good to see fierce competition just behind Mark for the naturally aspirated competitors with Robert Crowfoot just piping Ifor and Nuno. The Generation Howell team also did very well in 5th spot.
The use of 30 controls and a concentration of these in the middle of the map allowed everyone to get decent score totals and I shall follow this trend in the final event at the White House on 6th February.
Generally the use of iO is starting to stabilise and it is hoped that it will lead to more interest from younger competitors and new organisors.
