Event Report
The second SLOW event of the 2024/2025 series used the popular area of sandy heathland spanning out from the start/finish village of Elstead in Surrey. This area is generally considered "all-weather" although after a relentless winter of rain and damp weather there was much fun to had in multiple areas of standing water or "lakes". These chilly obstacles didn't stop a number of riders from pursuing the 40 points on offer at the checkpoint on the east edge of Thursley Common!
First time event planner, Rachel Clay, was keen that the course could not be cleared by anyone and using MapRun, placed checkpoints far and wide with a total score of 740 on offer in the 3 hour category. This facilitated a vast number of different strategies and routes taken by the strong field of 44 riders across the event. The 3 hour pairs category, new for this season, was popular with 7 pairs entered, most of whom were mixed. 1st in this category were Andrew Woodhouse and Damon de Boor with only 40 seconds to spare and a respectable score of 450.
Highest scoring rider in the 3 hour solo category was Ian Cartwright M60 who scored 560 points. Ifor Powell M50 was in 2nd with 541, with Stephen Dadswell M50 in 3rd with 502. Several riders took illegal short cuts and incurred penalties.
Newcomers to MTBO, Peter Coghill and Simon Bush, placed 1st in the 2 hour category despite being just over 7 minutes late and losing 11 of their 390 points. A number of E-bikers joined the event and thoroughly enjoyed their adventures, managing to keep their batteries clear of the deeper water.
