Event Report
Event three of the series started from Watchtree Nature Reserve. Always renowned for being a windy spot (which is presumably why they built the turbines here) we were also greeted by frequent vicious cold showers. Fortunately they backed of for a large part of the event and most people stayed reasonably dry.
Having only visited the venue last year we decided that we would want to do something a little different this year. We opted for a Short Area Format. This format has been used in the south successfully before but never at an ABC event. There were 10 blue controls and 10 red controls. Riders could start on which ever colour they liked but once they swapped they could not swap back. To add a little extra spice there were also 5 black controls around the Nature reserve that could be visited anytime. A little gentle, mental gymnastics were required to plot a strategy. Swap too soon and you risk running out of controls to visit. Despite our fears of confusing you all, everyone coped well and no one forfeited points for getting it wrong.
The courses turned out to be a little short and three riders cleared up within the time limit. Well done Tom, Simon and Alex. With three events having now taken place the league table is now starting to take shape. Remember that it is your best three events from 5 that count towards winning a Palace Cycles voucher.
The Next Event - Greystoke 10th June
Our plan was to hold the event from the Boot and Shoe like last year were scuppered with the landlord leaving at short notice last week. They are hoping to have a new manager in place by Monday but they may not be able to offer food so be prepared. If all else fails we will still run the event from the back of a car in the village car park. Sorry but beyond our control. We will try to keep you updated.
We are planning to use an area that has not been used by the ABC before so something to look forward. If the weather is good then the views alone will be sufficient reward!
