Event Report
The fourth Lakeland Lanequest arrived in the heart of the lakes starting from The Tower Bank Arms, Near Sawrey, Hawkshead which is just next door to Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s house. This area meant more hills than the previous events and so some testing climbs for the competitors to take into account when planning their optimum route. The event, organized by Chris Stevens, covered an area just north of Hawkshead around Knipe Fold and south to Ickenthwaite and Crosslands, west it went through Satterthwaite and Grizedale, and the east through Cunsey to go along the shore of Windermere. This made for a close contest, with four riders in the Solo Men class managing to visit all 30 controls, Mike Toyn (Staveley) led with 306 due to time bonus points, from equal second David Heffernan (Ulverston) and David Hollingham (Endmoor) on 304 points, and fourth placed Ben Oglesby with 298 points. In the Solo Women Anne Plant (from Pennington near Ulverston) led with 274, closely followed in joint second by Jo Cleary (Heversham) and Stephanie Jones both gaining 270 points. The juniors saw Jake Mason and Tom Simpson in first place with 250 points, from an unusual second place for Bryony Halcrow on 244 points. Matt and Katie Woods managed to maintain their unbeaten record, but had to share first place in the Generation Pairs class with Stuart Walker and Parris Huitson with both pairs scoring 250 points. The Adults pairs / 3’s also resulted in a very closely fought contest in the with Mike Brooks and Andy Beck also managing to maintain their unbeaten record but they also had to share first place with Mike Brooks and Andy Beck, both with 280 points from third placed Al Boston and Gareth Roscoe 258 points.
The overall league positions are now becoming clearer after 4 events, with Mike Toyn edging away with 1192 overall, in the Solo Men from David Hollingham 1178 and David Heffernan 1159. Anne Plant is leading the solo Women with 1040 from Stepanie Jones 995 and closely followed by Jo Cleary 993. In the Juniors Bryony Halcrow is the clear leader with 918, and the Generation Pairs has Matt and Katie Woods with 998, comfortably leading Stuart Walker and Parris Huitson 868, from Chris Stevens and Hannah Cleary Hughes on 843, in the Adult pairs / 3’s Mike Brooks and Andy Beck lead with 1054 from Jennifer Hutton and Nick Hewitt 892, and Graham Clarke and Martin Spetch 791.
For those who wonder what route you should have done, and are interested in the geeky details of the routes, here are the routes for the leading Solo Men.
David Heffernan’s route: 20 19 15 9 8 7 10 14 18 13 11 6 26 3 5 2 1 4 12 16 17 21 23 22 28 30 29 27 25 24 .This is 31.5 miles, 1509 feet of climbing.
Mike Toyn did the same route in reverse.
Dave Hollingham had a variant (doesn't he always). He also did it in reverse order to this but put control 7 in between 26 and 6. This is 30.7 miles, 1590 feet. Dave looks to have chosen the best route!
