Event Report
Wray just south of the Lune and The Bridge House Farm was the venue for the fifth Lakeland Lanequest and Peter Edge the event organiser had carefully selected the area to give the competitors a very testing event. On the map the 30 controls looked to have been spread fairly evenly across an area starting from Wray in the west up to Low Bentham by the River Wenning and across to go beyond High Bentham, the “High” in the name giving a clue as to the terrain. The controls then spread south and were clustered both sides of the River Hindburn, and thus offered many route options. To test the riders fully the minor roads linking the controls between the two river valleys involved some steep climbs on narrow roads, some gated, some even cobbled and the weather added to the trial with some wind, though fortunately the rain held off. This proved a challenging event for the 100 or so competitors, and it was generally considered to be the hilliest event of the 5 so far. The views did compensate for the climbs with some lovely views, especially near the “Great Stone of Fourstone” a sort of mini bowder stone.
David Hollingham (Endmoor) in the Solo men visited all 30 controls and with some time in hand to score an impressive 306 points for a clear win from Ben Oglesby 292, a name to watch in future, with Brian Singleton 290 in third place on a mountain bike. Anne Plant won decisively with 258, from = 2nd Jo Cleary and Stephanie Jones on 240 points. In the Generation pairs Stuart Walker and Parris Huitson scored 226 to win from second placed Chris Stevens & Hannah Cleary Hughes with 210, and a three way tie for third shared by Rebekah & Natalie Beadle, Richard Tiley & Angus Dobson and Steve Mason & Tom Mason all on 170. The Adults pairs / 3’s saw Andrew & Sarah Crozier score 250 to win from in second placed Sophie Garne & John Walsh 238, closely followed in third Mike Brooks and Andy Beck 236 points.
After five events the overall league positions are taking shape, David Hollingham in the Solo men gains first spot with 1200, from Mike Toyn 1192 and third David Heffernan 1159. Anne Plant still leads the solo Women with 1068; Jo Cleary just takes second with 1008 from Stepanie Jones 1005. In the Juniors Bryony Halcrow is still the clear leader with 918, and the Generation Pairs has Matt and Katie Woods with 998, leading an improved Stuart Walker and Parris Huitson 920, from Chris Stevens and Hannah Cleary Hughes on 856. The Adult pairs / 3’s Mike Brooks and Andy Beck lead with 1054, coming into second Andrew & Sarah Crozier 1032, push Jennifer Hutton and Nick Hewitt 916 into third.
