Wark Forest – Planners Comments
Blazing sunshine greeted the 52 lucky souls who ventured to Stonehaugh on Sunday for the final NEMBOS event of the year. This being the 4th event held in the forest in the last 5 years, I tried to" mix up" the trail choices and challenged any one to clear up. If it hadn’t been for a downpour on the Saturday night the trails would have been a lot faster, especially the bridleways, however everyone seemed to enjoy the day and the bar in the Community Centre afterwards. Congratulations to all the category winners. A big thank you to all who came along especially those who travelled quite a distance to be there. We planners really do appreciate it. A further big thank you to all the control collectors.
Organiser’s Comments
Thanks to Steve Watson for planning another excellent course and Jens for another excellent map. Steve decided to use the southern half of the forest to avoid the muddy track linking the northern half. The weather was perfect and the forest roads very fast so it was difficult to believe that we were riding in an MBO event in Northumberland in the late summer of 2012. Thanks to all of the helpers as usual but especially Andy, Andy, Dave, John who helped us put out the controls on Saturday and Martin, Matt, Ray, Leigh who helped collect them in on Sunday afternoon.
Unfortunately #53 was put out on the track bend instead of the footbridge as Andy misread the descriptions. I hope it didn’t spoil your ride and that you have been given the points if you couldn’t find it and/or the time allowance if it made you late. The forest tracks will be resurveyed for next year as some of them are very overgrown, others are much improved and there are a few new ones (as Ray discovered).
I enjoyed my 2 hour ride as I decided to head east on the bridleways I had never ridden before. I also ignored my own advice about not going too far for 5 point controls when I rode 6k to visit #34. It was worth it as the views were stunning and I could then ride the bridleways through #58. Unfortunately I checked the bird hide thoroughly at 58 and decided that the control had been stolen until I rode another 50m to the fishing lodge – so another building to add to the map.
Congratulations to Bryan Singleton who just pipped Andy Conn (despite Andy hiding some of the controls); Henry Syska winning M60 ahead of John and Ray; John Rawden beating Steve Foster by 4 points in M50; Max & Martin Vesty winning the Generation category and 7th overall with 360 points; David Blair in M21; Karen Blackburn as first woman and Karen & Steve outscoring Andrea & Geoff.
Congratulations to the 2012 NEMBO Champions and I will post the final League table as soon as John Dixon has updated it.
M40 Andy Conn (Men’s Champion) 300 pts
M50 Graham Fielding 285
M60 John Dixon 267
Gen Max & Martin Vesty 249
W60 Karen Blackburn (Women’s Champion) 212
X50 Andrea Foster & Geoff Moorhouse 210
M21 Martin Edwards 210
