The first of the Organic Adventure, Winter league. (Elland 25th November)
· 3 Days creating, plotting and planning the maps (in the rain)
· 8 Hours putting out checkpoints (in the rain)
· 2 X 6:00 Starts
· 5 Hours collecting in checkpoints (in the rain)
· 8 Hours standing in the freezing cold! (No rain!)
All worth it in the end, what a fantastic turn out for a very cold, damp morning in West Yorkshire, we had hardly emptied the boot to set up registration when, the first very keen competitors started to arrive. I’m not sure if it was an attempt to keep warm, or just the excitement of so many new faces arriving, but whatever it was it helped us to get the first ones on their way a little after 8:30 (30 min before scheduled start time! Almost the same time as the rains stopped, everyone had left the start area by 10:00 which meant that we had a couple of hours to relax before they started to return. The Landlord of the Barge & Barrel, wants me to add a big thank you, to all those who had meals, coffees and a lot of other refreshments in front of the huge warm fire, after the event!
This Elland event was, the first time that we have allowed runners/ walkers to compete alongside mountain bikers, just the same as the bikers they had one map, 30 checkpoints and 3 hours to reach as many as possible, navigation and route choice are just as important here as any level of fitness which was proved by some of the runners who managed superb scores some far more than the bikers!
The results, remember for the Winter league, it’s your best total score from your best three events, that matters!
Mountain Bikers
In 1st place Will Barraclough, 483 points, closely followed by John Rawden, 450 points and in 3rd Saul Muldoon, 445 points.
Runners
1st place Simon Martland with an extremely impressive 390 points (also putting him in 6th place overall!) 2nd Neil Croasdale, 155 points and 3rd Castleberg Outdoors team, Ruth Craig and Jenny DeGrands, 95 points.
So far 1st and 2nd runner’s placements are taken by EPOC members, while the biking is been led by East Pennine Adventure Runners! What skills do they have we don’t, we will have to look into this!
Congratulations to everyone who took part, we look forward to seeing you at our next event on Monday the 3rd of December (Scammonden)
