Event Report
Moray Active Schools with assistance from Moravian Orienteering Club, supported the Miltonduff Community Sports Hub day with the first Mountain Bike Orienteering event ever held in Moray in the nearby Monaughty Forest with kind permission of the Forestry Commission. The event was also supported by OutfitMoray’s ‘Bike Revolution’ offering tips and advice on servicing your Bike. The courses were in a Score format which allows competitors to take each of the 19 marked control on the map in whichever order they like, but also within a set time limit, which for this event was either 1 hour or 2 hours taking in much of the forest including a steep climb to its peak. Conditions were ‘freshened up’ by some fairly heavy rain in the preceding 36 hours, with some of the steeper tracks resembling streams. It was great to see a mix of competitors of all ages, some of whom were more familiar with foot orienteering and others with normal Mountain Biking. Everyoen seemed to return with a smile on their face, covered in mud and a good story to tell of their experiences. In the end, it was the orienteers that fared better, with more familiarity with the map style and competition format; several mountain bikers, especially Jim Barron, went very fast but missed controls because of the way they had folded their maps. They would quickly eradicate these errors as they become more experienced. The standout performances came from Kintessack’s Jon Hollingdale, who managed to take in all 19 controls in 58 minutes on the 2 Hour Course, he was followed by Chris Spencer in 84 mins and Roo Hornby in 88 mins. However special mention should also George Paterson from Lossiemouth who took in 17 controls on a road/hybrid bike with narrow tyres and no suspension in 59 mins on the 1 hour course; this is not the recommended type of bike for these conditions! He was followed by local Physiotherapist Andi Robinson and her son in second with over-65 Neil Maclean in third. Another over 65 who performed very impressively on the 2 hour course, was Derek McNeill from Forres.
Miltonduff Community Sports Hub will play host to another MTB orienteering event on 31st Jul 2013, as part of the Scottish 6 Days Orienteering festival 2013. John McMulkin of Moray Active Schools said ‘This hub is a great venue for staging event such as this – it’s located about 3 miles to the southwest of Elgin, adjacent to forests and quiet roads perfect for both running and cycling.’ Moravian Orienteering Club are using it for their next Sat League event on 29 Sep. If you would like more information on the Community Sports Hub, please contact John McMulkin, Active Schools manager on 01343 862929 or john.mcmulkin@moray.gov.uk .
