Event Report
Rain was lashing on the windows of the Creg Ny Baa at around 6pm when 24 pairs of dedicated Mountain Bike Orienteers headed off to navigate their way around a 2-hour course spread around the Conrhenny,
Baldrine, Axnfell and Glen Roy area.
Six of the 30 teams who had entered opted to stay indoors and missed out on the fun. Somewhat ironically, the date was chosen because it coincided with a full moon - yet the low cloud meant that visibility was less than 50 metres! As their red lights vanished into the gloom, we did wonder if we would see them again...
Although most reported that the trails and back lanes were simply awash with flood water, everyone came in smiling and laughing about their experiences. The rain had at least washed away any trace of ice and it was relatively warm at around 9 degrees. As always, the pace and coverage of the top teams was impressive. Overall winners Mark Eastham & Andy Cook (Men's Team) collected 375 of the 400 available points (although losing 15 in time penalties). Top Women's team were Paula Gelling & Wendy Sandford whilst the best mixed team were Dave Gooberman & Catreena Quirk.
Various edibles and beverages were awarded as prizes and it seemed from the post-event banter that everyone had a good time despite the conditions.
Many thanks to the staff at the Creg Ny Baa for hosting the event and providing food for everyone.
