Event Report
A sunny evening greeted the riders who turned out for this, the inaugural Allerdale Bike Challenge.
The format for the event was deliberately kept simple with 20 controls all worth 10 points. Our aim was to make the event accessible to all irrespective of age or ability. We had placed a hand full of controls within easy reach of the event centre to encourage families and novices to have a go whilst making sure that there were enough distant controls to keep the fastest of riders happy. We had estimated that to clear the area would take about 30 miles of riding in the two hours available. In the event only one team managed to ‘clear’ the map and they did this with 12 minutes to spare!
Being the first of the series, and a new format, we were never quite sure how many people would turn up, but true to form the entries started coming in quickly right at the last minute. We printed a few extra maps just in case which was just as well as another 18 turned up on the night! A total of 51 riders exceeded our expectations for the first event.
Chris Hope and Phil Davies were the only ones to clear the map and score the maximum 200pts. Not to outdone by ‘hubbie’, Helen Hope riding with Kath Wrigley was not far behind with 169 points to take the first Female placing. One point higher on 170 was first mixed pairing of Pete Leeson and Angela Wakefield. Junior orienteer Katrina Hemingway swapped shoes for wheels to try out Bike O for the first time and came home with a very creditable 110 points, whilst Ross and Zoe Ferguson took the honours in the Generation class.
It was really pleasing to see a number of families turn up and have a go at a new sport. Having collected a number of controls, they returned with big smiles and wanting to know when the next event was!
The feedback we received was all positive so we hope that everyone is going to bring a friend to the second event in Dearham on the 5th June. The event centre will be in the Mill Inn who will be serving food until 9pm so hopefully you will hang around and share your experiences afterwards over a drink. Entries are already open so please try to enter on line well in advance so that we can print enough maps.
Dates for the rest of the series are on the calendar. The final event will also be the series prize giving at the Lakeland Pedlar in Keswick. It will be your best 3 events from the 5 that will count.
Get you entries in now!
Look forward to seeing there
Tony & Angela
