Event Report
4Play cycles of Cockermouth were the kind hosts of this event which started right in the town centre. Yet again the series was blessed by a superb sunny evening. Keep offering your prayers to the rain gods for the last two events - I am sure our luck cannot last!
The event area headed east from Cockermouth along the beautiful Derwent Valley and over the Setmurthy Common. Riders who tackled any of the short but vicious climbs onto the Common would have been rewarded with superb views down the Lorton Valley if oxygen debt did not blur their vision.
We had hoped that the hillier terrain for this event would have slowed the riders down a bit but in the end five riders managed to ‘clear’ the map. We are obviously too soft on you.
Phil Davies and Chris Hope collected all 20 checkpoints in 1 hour 39 minutes and then to add insult injury declared that they had wasted time repairing a puncture. A superb ride. From the ‘best of the rest’ John Slater and Kevin Hodgson, who are having their own private battle, also cleared but John had a 3 minute advantage over Kevin which puts him into top spot in the league.
Katie Lukas managed a one control advantage over Helen Hope and Kath Wrigley and with it moves into top position in the league for what may only be a short time if Helen and Kath have their way.
Roger Jackson and Margaret Mackenzie missed out by a mere 2 point time penalty to Angela Wakefield and Pete Leeson in the mixed class. Will they get their revenge next time?
No less than seven Generation teams battled it out. With a couple of obvious loops that collected 8 controls, it came down to who would have the legs to get the extras. First timers, Karen & Matt Blackley just had the edge over the more experienced Rea and Ferguson families. All juniors went home tired but with smiles and ‘chocolate orange’ for their hard work. Well done to Richard and Jonty who went around on a tandem.
The next event in the series moves away for the hills and out onto the Solway plain. Starting right on the coast at Mawbray, riders will be exploring a multitude of small lanes that wiggle in land. You are almost guaranteed to go places you did not know existed. Hills may not be the problem but beware the wind that can make you miscalculate the return leg!
The event is hosted by the Dunes Coffee shop and Bistro who will be staying open later especially for us. They serve an excellent range of meals, snacks and drinks, but if you intend to have a full meal you would be advised to have an earlier start as they stop taking orders for meals around 8pm.
All riders will receive a £2 voucher to spend in the café on the night.
Look forward to seeing you there,
Tony & Angela
