Event Report
After spending the previous day struggling through wind, sleet and snow I did wonder whether planning an event in the centre of Dartmoor at the end of March was such a good idea. Added to this, the heavy recent rain had risen the river to unprecedented levels meaning I had to make the tough decision to close all six of the Bridleway river crossings, which meant that those riders who wanted to reach the top scoring CP's had a long dog-leg road section. That evening was spent sat up altering all the maps to reflect this !!!
Event day started with a 6 o'clock alarm and the sun shining through the curtains :)
By 8 o'clock we were setting up in the hall and soon ready to welcome the first riders. By 09:30 the hall was a hive of activity with riders registering, being briefed and setting off onto the moors. It wasn't long before the first casualty of the day returned with a broken hub. This was to be first of many with the rugged landscape of Dartmoor claiming its prey, most managing to limb around carrying their wounds!!
By 2 o'clock most riders had returned and were sharing tales of the trail while tucking into the cake and flapjacks that had had Faye rather cross while cooking them ;)
At the presentation, Ifor Powell took 1st place overall with 508pts from a possible 600, our czech guest , Ladislav Moulis took 2nd place (430), with Fiona Boyd taking 3rd & best Female. Janet Burroughes & Matt Jepson winning the Pairs Category.
After a tense wait for one remaining rider ( last seen at Venford reservior some 20km away with only 45 mins of his time left) to return, we were relieved to see him turn into the car park, enabling us to finish packing up and proceeding to collect in the Cps.
As the clock struck 18:00 we pulled up at home, exhausted, but with a happy glow that the event seemed to run smoothly at that everyone seemed to have enjoyed it.
A couple of nice chilled bottles of wine and takeaway pizza was our reward!!!!
Thanks to you all for attending, We hope you all enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed putting it on. Thanks to Faye for the lovely cakes and smiley face on registration, and to Rich for his help on the day and collecting in Cps.
We hope to see you all at our next event at Puddletown Forest, Dorchester on Saturday 21st June 2014.
Thanks again,
Will
