Event Report
Mike Manning, who I believe has ridden in all the Ledbury Lanequests will confirm that on these events you
can expect some uncomfortable weather.
The first, at Putley took place in a heatwave with 34deg+ temperatures, the second, at Staunton encountered
freezing fog, and the third at Colwall attracted torrential thunderstorms. So an hour or so of freezing rain on
Sunday was no more or less par for the course.
However, despite this some very respectable scores were achieved.
The plan was to concentrate the 20 and 40 point controls around the body of the map, with 10 pointers
largely on the periphery for those confident enough to tackle them, but still making route choice sufficiently
variable to provide a challenge. Approximate mileages were provided to assist riders in their route choice
strategies, and the impression I got was that this theme worked reasonably well, as a number of riders scored
around the 500 point level which I felt would be a reasonable target.
Congratulations to Phil, Andy and Simon who all managed this, albeit in some cases reduced by a few
minutes of lateness.
But now for the hair shirt bit.
Three of the controls were not as they should have been. Controls 1, 11 and 12.
Control 12 was drawn over the wrong footpath, and I had mistaken one of the numbers on control 11. For
these errors I apologise and hope that I have awarded points where appropriate. Control 1 was rather more
bizarre. The adjacent house is being re roofed, and the builder had piled the old tiles against the wall on
which the hydrant was fixed. There was another hydrant some 400m downhill with a similar number, but this
was not actually the one identified on the map. Again, I hope I have awarded points where appropriate.
However, we did raise over £80.00 for the charity “Survival International”, and hopefully you did enjoy
riding in a relatively unused area.
