Event Report
With so many great trails between Grasmere and Coniston, it was always going to be hard to leave areas off the event map, so it was quite a big map. It was hoped that this would increase the need to plan a route carefully and there was certainly a lot of variation in routes ridden.//
//Around 40 riders turned out on what was a chilly day, with a fair amount of surface water after the previous night's rain.//
//Best score on the day was achieved by Peter Strong and Bob Glaister, who cruised around the outside of the map, clockwise, round (not over) Loughrigg Fell, Claife, Grizedale, Tarn Howes and the quarries. 30 penalties for lateness was cutting it fine, but such risks often pay off.//
//Second overall with 347 was Bryan Singleton who ignored Loughrigg, heading clockwise to Tarn Howes, Arnside/Park Fell, then Hodge Close.//
//Julian Cooper's Spanish training camp paid off, with his honed legs giving him 335 points and third place, clearing up on Loughrigg (nearly.......) and then clockwise, like the winners route. If he'd only paused to 'dib' the 10 pointers on Loughrigg and near Clappersgate instead of sailing past them.......//
//In fourth was Ray Morris, who took a different approach by clearing up the west side of the map to score 310, closely followed by Bernard Moore with a similar route to Ray and 300 points.//
//Helen Jackson and Paul Vousden rode strongly for 297 points and Angela Brand Barker was the highest placed solo lady with 250 points.//
//Apologies from me for the discrepancies between some scores on the descriptions and the map, but at least it meant that extra points were awarded (shown on the results in column F). It's a shame that control 16 had been removed - there is always a risk of this, especially when controls are too obviously visible.//
//Thanks all for turning out and see you in Gosforth in January or Rosthwaite next wednesday evening.
