Event Report
Well the sun did come out, all be it late in the day and the rain stayed away making conditions under wheel pretty good. One comment was that it was “one of the cleanest events I’ve done”. //
////
//Trellech and the surrounding woodland areas of the Wye valley do look at their best in the early autumn with some great colour swatches //
//I decided to move the event area slightly south and west to include a few tracks not used in previous events. The area around Cobblers Plain also afforded some great views towards the Black mountains if morning mist allowed. In fact at all four corners of the map could provide contrasting vistas as the ground dropped away steeply giving some great views if you had time to stand and stare for a few seconds. Putting controls out on Friday evening gave a new dimension to the area. Two Tawney, one Barn and one Little owl mixed with loads of deer and the sound of wild boar kept the interest as the last control was placed just after 10.00pm.//
////
//The plan was to place the majority of controls in the central undulating area and add the temptation of a few high scoring controls much lower down in the corners. Getting all of the 30 point controls was going to take some doing and I thought the climb involved would make a clearance virtually impossible so very well done to Ifor Powell (438) who did just that in only 5 minutes over the 3.5 hour time limit. Richard Haynes (410) and Mark Rowley (390) scored strongly in 2nd and 3rd with only 2 controls less than Ifor. Good to see that route choice of the first three were all different so there was evidently no ‘obvious’ best direction.//
////
//Kate Darlington was first female with a solid score (225). Ruth Arkle/Kevin Shere won the mixed (220) and there was a close finish in the intergeneration class as John and Ann Methven (180) just pipped Lisa and Adam Methven (160) to win the family bragging rights, at least until the next event.//
////
//Special mention for Local man Richard Newhouse scored a creditable 200 points in 2 hours and to Luc Ashworth who had the main part of his frame part company from the fork of his bike in a truly spectacular failure. Luckily he was not seriously hurt.//
////
//Many thanks to Amanda and Verda for excellent catering and Kate for the baking contribution. Donations will be passed to local Pathcare scheme with a request to replace some of the stiles on bridleways with gates!//
////
//Thanks Ifor, Sion, James and Jason for collecting in the majority of the controls leaving me to pick up the remaining ones just as the sun set. Less wildlife this time, just one face to face encounter with a startled stag who soon disappeared into the undergrowth. //
